The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) actively participated in the public forum titled "Human Rights Education in the Philippines: Status, Challenges, and Future Directions" held on July 19 at UP College of Law, Diliman, Quezon City.
This event, hosted by the UP Law Center Institute of Human Rights (UP IHR), brought together key stakeholders to discuss the current state and future directions of human rights education (HRE) in the Philippines.
CEAP's participation underscores its commitment to transformative education grounded in principles of justice and peace. By actively engaging in discussions on HRE, CEAP aims to contribute to positive changes within its institutions and across Philippine society.
The forum highlighted both the progress and challenges in HRE. While frameworks exist, Ms. Maricel Fernandez-Carag emphasized the need to move beyond mere compliance and foster a deeper understanding of human rights. Dr. Jerrick Gerard Go echoed this concern, pointing to the pandemic and misinformation as obstacles.
CEAP believes that effective HRE strategies must be tailored to specific needs. Sharing best practices was a key theme with Atty. Juan Carlo P. Tejano discussing legal empowerment initiatives and Mr. Francisco B. Bermido Jr. highlighting successful grassroots strategies.
The forum also explored ways to mainstream HRE. Ms. Jessamine Pacis, for example, emphasized the role of technology in promoting digital rights and fostering inclusive digital citizenship. Ms. Sarah Jane I. Elago further stressed the importance of youth involvement in shaping HRE legislation.
CEAP's commitment to strengthening HRE extends beyond the forum. In May 2024, CEAP launched a training program for Araling Panlipunan teachers in NCR, demonstrating their proactive approach to fostering a more equitable and just society through education.
